Decoherence

Decoherence is the phenomenon in which a quantum system loses its quantum state over time or due to external interference. It is one of the key challenges facing quantum computing, because most quantum systems in use today have qubits that decohere even with very little environmental noise. The susceptibility of a quantum platform to noise is characterized by several metrics, including:

  • T1 time (also called relaxation time): the time it takes for a qubit in the |1⟩ state to relax to the |0⟩ state.
  • T2 time: the time it takes for a qubit’s phase information to no longer be preserved.
