Color Centers/NV Centers

A color center is a defect in the lattice of a diamond. One of the most studied examples is the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, which consists of a nearest-neighbor pair:

  • A nitrogen atom substituting for a carbon atom.
  • A vacancy (missing atom) in the lattice.
  • These centers exhibit optically active properties, such as spin-dependent photoluminescence. Because their energy levels can be manipulated and read out optically, NV centers can serve as a qubit platform for quantum computation. Their robustness at room temperature and ability to interact with light make them especially promising for quantum sensing and quantum networking applications.
